PREVENTION:

Only prophylactic medication is available for Malaria.
Therefore good personal protection from insects is very important.
HOW DO I PROTECT MYSELF FROM MOSQUITOES AND OTHER INSECTS?
Personal Protective Measures (PPM) are critical when visiting areas that have these insects.
PPM is defined as using insect repellant with DEET on the exposed skin and Permethrin
0.5% on outer clothing, mosquito nets and wearing protective clothing such as long sleeved shirts and long pants.
For the exposed skin we
recommend 20 - 35% Deet in a sustained release
formulation. Both the Sawyer brand and the
Ultrathon brand are sustained release products.
The Sawyer brand of insect
repellant is 20% Deet and is applied every 6 hours.
The Ultrathon brand of insect repellant is 33% Deet
and is applied every 12 hours. These products are easy to use and safe for children.
Remember to always apply you
sunscreen first and let it dry - then apply the
insect repellant.
